How to Use This Tool

Start by reviewing the default evening tasks listed, editing their names, durations, and units (minutes or hours) to match your routine. Add custom tasks using the "Add Custom Task" button for personal activities like walking pets or packing bags. Adjust the buffer time between tasks and select any meal prep time needed, then click "Calculate Total Duration" to see your full evening schedule breakdown.

Use the reset button to revert all inputs to default settings at any time. After calculating, click "Copy Results to Clipboard" to save your schedule for quick reference.

Formula and Logic

The calculator uses a simple additive formula to determine your total evening routine duration:

  • Convert all task durations to minutes (multiply hour values by 60)
  • Sum all converted task durations to get total task time
  • Calculate total buffer time: (number of tasks - 1) * buffer time per task (only applied if you have 2+ tasks)
  • Add selected meal prep time to the sum
  • Total Duration = Total Task Time + Total Buffer Time + Meal Prep Time

Results are displayed in both minutes and hours/minutes format, with a visual progress bar scaling to a maximum 4-hour evening routine.

Practical Notes

  • Novice cooks should add 50% more time to meal-related tasks to account for unfamiliar steps or recipe adjustments.
  • Add 10-15 minutes of buffer time between tasks to cover unexpected delays like finding missing items or answering messages.
  • Use the custom task feature to include irregular evening activities like attending events or hosting guests.
  • If you have back-to-back tasks with no break, set buffer time to 0 minutes.
  • Meal prep time is calculated separately from cooking duration, so include extra prep like chopping vegetables or marinating meat here.

Why This Tool Is Useful

This planner eliminates guesswork when structuring your evening, helping you avoid overcommitting or running late for bedtime routines. It accounts for real-world delays with buffer time settings, and adapts to personal schedules with custom task options. The detailed breakdown lets you identify time-heavy tasks to optimize or delegate, making your evening flow smoother and less stressful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add custom tasks to the planner?

Yes, use the "Add Custom Task" button to include any personal evening routines not listed in the default tasks, such as walking pets, packing lunches for the next day, or practicing a hobby. You can edit the name, duration, and unit for all custom tasks just like default ones.

How is buffer time calculated?

Buffer time is added between each pair of consecutive tasks. For example, if you have 4 tasks and set 10 minutes of buffer, 30 total minutes of buffer time will be added to your total duration. No buffer time is added if you only have one task.

Can I switch task durations between minutes and hours?

Yes, each task has a unit dropdown next to its duration input. Select "Hours" to enter longer durations like a 2-hour movie night, or "Minutes" for shorter tasks like washing dishes. All values are converted to minutes for calculation automatically.

Additional Guidance

Review your evening routine weekly to adjust task durations as your habits change—for example, if you get faster at cleaning the kitchen over time, reduce that task's duration to free up more free time. Share your calculated schedule with household members to align expectations for shared tasks like cooking or cleaning. If you consistently run over your planned duration, increase buffer times or remove non-essential tasks from your routine.
